Larger and better views with frameless bifolding doors

If you are embarking on building a new extension for the home, you may be looking at a design that incorporates large glass panels to try and gain the maximum amount of glass area.

A large window is perfectly possible with today’s modern window materials, design and technology.  But if you’re looking for large bifolding doors what options are open to you?

Advantages of wide and tall bifolding doors.

Having large doors designed into your new extension offers real design possibilities. You can create that real “Grand Designs” type extension that you’ll often see on television programmes where large glass walls are created.

If you are lucky enough to live in a property that enjoys great view of the city, the countryside or even the sea, making your doors wide and tall simply makes your view much better.  Our image here is typical of a modern glazed extension or home where large glass panels are popular.

However, what you may not know is that many normal bifolding doors can’t go as wide or as tall as you wish.

Comparing sizes of frameless doors and conventional doors.

In doing your research, you’ll see some bifolding door manufacturers publicising their maximum sizes.  For  many of the most popular systems, the maximum heights are typically no more than 2400mm.  Some bifold doors can go up to 270mm high, whilst a few of the high end products specified by architects can go up to 3metres in height.

When it comes to door widths, there are several things to consider.  It is true that the wider the panel the better the overall view.  However with any folding door the wider the door panel the more room it will take up when open and folded back. If your doors open inwards you many want to keep your door panels as narrow as possible.  If your doors open out some homes with smaller gardens many also want to take into account how wide each door panel is.

However, if you are not restricted on space and are looking for wide door panels it’s important again to look at the product offerings from the well known bifolding door brands.  In many cases you’ll find they can only be made up to 1000mm wide or rarely 1200mm wide.

Do your research carefully and you’ll often see that whilst a folding door may state a maximum width of say 1200mm and a maximum height of 3000mm often these maximum sizes can’t be used to create a door panel of 1200 x 3000mm.  You’ll very often find that a wide door needs to be shorter than the maximum and a tall door needs to be narrower than the maximum.

Frameless Bifolding doors can be made wider and taller than conventional doors.

What our customers say

Delighted with final result and extremely pleased that I decided on these ‘frameless glass doors’ over conventional bifolds. The company had no end of patience with any pre-order questions that I raised and the factory visit and visit to view an existing installation were very informative and reassuring. The team that fitted were professional, attentive and extremely competent and the final result excellent and much admired. Thank you. I would not hesitate to recommend the

The service I received from FGD was professional and prompt from the initial on site survey through to installation and completion. Added to this the finished product has exceeded my expectations. It has enhanced my home with style and individuality, and enabled me to make use of the space in a way that is ‘unique’.

On first contact you talked and demonstrated the unit, the installers were very polite, clean and tidy. I am very pleased with the product and I would recommend FGD to other people.

How did we advise you on first contact? I was constructing a new extension and FGC were very helpful and understanding of the nature of the project. Updates to the original design (like addition of an extra door) were accomodated easily and efficiently Installation – were the installers polite and did they clean and tidy up afterwards? All polite and as clean as necessary, although given the site was a work in progress with other

The installer was excellent. In spite of being let down by another member of the team he got on with with the job in a positive manner. Disruption was kept to a minimum and he cleared and tidied up. He demonstrated how to use the doors, ensured I knew how to operate them and answered any questions before he left. He is a credit to your company. Overall: I am very pleased with my frameless

I contacted FGC to try and marry up a few weather strips to replace old one’s which I have already fitted on glass curtains. The glass curtains were not supplied by FGC and the company who supplied them, when asked for replacement weather strips just said “we no longer have these in stock and not sure if we can still get them”. FGC requested pictures of the seals and sent some samples free of charge

Contacted Frameless Glass Curtains (FGC) to have the existing wooden doors into the lounge and dining rooms of our home replaced with clear glass. The reasons being twofold, firstly being to open up the hallway and secondly to make the most of the natural light that floods the rear of our south-facing property. Having taken time to investigate the market, we down-selected FGC to undertake the work; our decision being fully vindicated by the quality

Feedback-wise all very good. No complaints at all. Not only would recommend but plan to buy another one in a year or two! Happy for you to put me down as a demo person and when the house(s) is finished you’d be welcome to have a video of the doors opening / closing as you have on your website as the views will be amazing. Cheers, Robert. You can read about this project here: http://www.fgc.dev/frameless-bifolding-doors-in-a-house-made-of-straw/
